EXR fully launched!

23rd Sep 2021

EXR participated in SportUp Start, our imec.istart service, the leading accelerator for tech startups. It offers support for mid-stage startups that already have a proof-of-concept product and have international ambitions.

On September 9, Salty Lemon Entertainment launched the indoor rowing app EXR. "The versatile training methods, impressive visuals and sound effects create a new indoor rowing experience," says world indoor rowing champion and winner of The Container Cup Ward Lemmelijn. EXR's immersive virtual environments and combination of gamification with performance-based components are ingredients for success, as EXR already convinces rowers in more than 60 countries.

Indoor rowing is a popular workout among fitness fans, competitive athletes and rowers where fun is more likely to come second. This makes the new app EXR a game changer. The name of the application is derived from the English term "exercise game" - and that's exactly what it's all about: With every stroke on the rowing machine, users move their virtual rowing boats through 3D experience worlds. For example, they pass by idyllic mountain landscapes or row on Boston's Charles River. EXR rewards top performance with leaderboards or coins that users use to obtain in-game items such as boats. Such gamification elements invite users to row longer and more often. Additional features such as training schedules, challenges and performance analysis motivate rowers to train even harder.

Focus on user experience

When developing EXR, we put the user experience first, explains CEO Alfred Campenaerts. He is the brother of world time record holder Victor Campenaerts and therefore knows how important customized training is. "Thanks to the enthusiastic rowers who put EXR under the microscope during the beta phase, we were able to develop an app tailored to their needs."

As a result, EXR appeals to curious beginners as well as to rowing champions.

Free Trial

Compared to other rowing apps, the focus shifts from coaching to personalizable workouts. Setup is also simple: To start a workout, users connect a rowing machine to a smartphone, tablet or computer running EXR. The app is available for Android, iOS, Windows and macOS since September 9 and has a 5-day free trial. After the trial period, users can continue training with a paid EXR subscription.

Boilerplate: EXR is a product of the Belgian game developer Salty Lemon Entertainment. In 2018, 4 friends founded the independent studio based in Antwerp. Supported by the likes of Imec.istart and DAE Studios, Salty Lemon Entertainment focuses on the convergence of technical innovation and passion for sports.
